The best weed control for your lawn starts with having a well-cared for lawn. When your grass is thick and healthy, it can help by blocking out areas for weeds to even get started. Keeping up on your lawn and feeding it regularly can help promote this density and squeeze those weeds out before they start.
Every lawn gets weeds though, and the best way to control them can depend on the severity of the weed infestation. Mildly weedy lawns may be best cared for by simply pulling the weeds before they have time to flower and produce seeds. If your lawn becomes too full of weeds to the point where things are not getting better, it may be time to start with a weed control program.
Seasonally Weed and Feed
One of the best times to hit weeds is when you are feeding your lawn. There are plenty of products on the market that promote themselves to be “weed and feed.” There are both granular and liquid versions of these fertilizer/weed killer combos that can work well. Our recommendation is Scotts Liquid Turf Builder with Plus 2 Weed Control. We recommend this product because the liquid fully covers leaves of the weeds and gives a better opportunity to have the herbicide fully soak in and kill the weeds. This product also has a little bit of phosphorous mixed in with the nitrogen in the fertilizer component, giving it a bit more complexity in nutrients for your lawn than competing products. Another benefit of this product is just how easy it is to apply. You do not need any special equipment, you simply screw on to the end of a hose and spray away! This product can be found at Lowes or Home Depot.
Weed Spray Alone
As you don’t want to over feed your lawn, you may want to only go after the weeds in the lawn vs. using a weed and feed. This may be a good time to go after any unwanted crabgrass as well. Our favorite spray is Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns, commonly available at Home Depot. This product does not kill your grass, and only hits the weeds, making the application simple with the hose end sprayer attachment.
Spot Treatment Not in Grass
To treat weeds in areas away from other vegetation, we recommend Otho Groundclear, available many places including Amazon. This is great for weedy areas and cracks in hardscapes and driveways. This product is OMRI listed for organic gardening and a great alternative to Round Up that works.
Organic options of weed killer are available. They take a bit more care to use as they may require multiple applications and to not target specific plants over others. The benefits of organics toward health and safety can make sense, and they are typically sustainably produced. Running a fully organic household inside and out can be a deeply rewarding lifestyle, but it does takes additional effort to take time to research. Organic weed killing options are typically not selective pesticides, meaning that whatever they cover they tend to kill, unlike a few of the weed sprays above that you do not have to selectively spray. That being said, caring for a lawn with organic products tends to take more care and time.
- This product is starting to become more available at many retailers. Green Gobbler is organic, bottled, and easy to spray. Check out more information on the product here. Products such as these can be easy to make at home as well for more cost-effective prices. The negative to making your own is you do have to buy your own sprayers and there is additional work involved. To learn more about making your own, check out this YouTube video.
There are many other weed control options for you out there, both organic and not. When caring for your lawn, the most important thing is for you to plan some time to care for your lawn. Remember to read all instructions on any products you are looking to use, and follow all directions and precautions.
Thank you for caring for your lawn!
